Commonwealth Games – Politics of Collusion

Why should only the Congress misue CBI - let all parties misuse the CBI! (Cartoon by Kirtish Bhatt).

Why should only the Congress misuse CBI - let all parties misuse the CBI! (Cartoon by Kirtish Bhatt).

In the beginning

The Commonwealth Games (CWG) proves the point that democracy breeds a collusive polity. In the beginning was the BJP.

1. Why did Vajpayee Government bid for CWG? It defies all common sense. The Commonwealth is an idea that is long dead – and definitely irrelevant.

2. If it was persuaded by the Anglo-Saxon Bloc, what is the quid-pro-quo? What did India get from CWG? This Commonwealth benefits the British! Let them host it, pay for it, support it and ‘persuade’ us to attend.

3. Yesterday, Times Now TV debate tells that the Vajpayee Government paid out some thousands of dollars for each vote to ‘win’ the right to ‘host’ these games? Delhi beat Hamilton, New Zealand for this ‘privilege’?

Sorrier tale, I have not heard in many years. Even if the Vajpayee Govt paid nothing for this ‘privilege’?

We’ll walk hand in hand …

Coming to Kawngressis: –

1. If the Kawngress had an iota of honesty, they should have protested this bid in the first place. When the BJP /NDA was in power.

2. Having got this fait accompli, the Kawngress should have been determined to do this at least cost, minimum shosha, tamasha – like Mani Shanker Iyer has proposed.

3. They should have put some good, honest bureaucrats on the job to achieve point no.2. Not allowed the likes of Mike Fennell and Mike Hooper to abuse Indian people, hospitality – and spend lakhs on them every month for this privilege. Rs.6.0 crore spent on them in the last few years.

A job so badly botched up, I have not seen in the last many years. Any way you look at it, the CWG is a case of collusive polity. And no one, but no one, comes out of this clean or decent. Not in my books at least.

Corruption has got more coverage - drowning out the other related issues. (Cartoon by by IRFAN; courtesy - cartoonistirfan.blogspot.com.).

Craving approval – without actions and achievements

This bit about promoting sports is another bad idea. Why is the State getting involved in the sports business. If it has to get involved, it must promote Indian sports.

Why is India building this huge infrastructure to promote Western sports. Why do we want to prove to the world that we can be good at Western sports. Like a columnist put it

Burning money on a gala sporting event does not make us a super-power

Anyway, what has sports got to do with nationhood. This nation-competition-sports is one bad idea, which must be killed.

Try as hard as anyone may, I just cannot be moved by this idea. No Indian can put up a good show of something as dishonest as CWG. I am not surprised that CWG is going to be a disaster! It will take a Great Disbeliever in the idea of India, to put up a good CWG.

Great Indian shows

Is it that Indians cannot put up a good show?

About ten years ago, India put up a great show. Unrivaled in the last 100 years, at least, by any country. It was called Y2K.

The Western world was at the cusp of an epic disaster – Y2K. Computer systems had used two-digit number to denote years. In 20th century, this was efficient use of computing power when raw computing power itself was expensive. Coming to the end of 20th century, when the number would go from 1999 to 2000, it was expected the logic used by computers would crash.

The West needed to rewrite the entire code for their industrial systems. And they had no spare programming capacity to do it. Enter India. In a matter of 7 years, desi, backward Indians obtained contracts, understood programming designs, deciphered the code, redesigned the new system, coded and tested their new systems, trained users and handed over fully working systems on D-date. It is 10 years now. These Indian systems continue to run the Western world.

Most recently, the corrupt and scam-tainted Satyam put up a faultless show at South Africa Football World Cup.

What has money got to do

Let us be clear – corruption has nothing to do with this fiasco. A highly corrupt China put up a great show at Beijing Olympics.

The CWG problem goes deeper. Even if the CWG were to go off smoothly,  I can’t be proud of this. Even if, this corruption allegations were poppycock! I have no answer to a simple question? Why are we doing the CWG? And there is no good answer to this question.

Write to me. If you have one reason. Just one, honest reason. Why should we host and promote this hoax.

Can you really motivate someone to do a good job on Commonwealth Games? I wonder ...

Of it is *always* the fault of the BJP 🙂

In fact the BJP hold the *primary* blame for everything that is wrong with India 🙂

When in doubt blame it on the BJP 🙂 When not in doubt blame the BJP 🙂

Brilliant, insightful, thought provoking, clear headed and unbiased blogging at its best 🙂

The question [rightly phrased by an American] is — why is India still in the Commonwealth, anyway? http://www.slate.com/id/2268989/

Instead of buying the games of shame and damaging brand India, a cool $4 billion could have been put to use to build a metro in hi-tech centers like Pune, Bangalore, or Hyderabad. By 2030, a whopping 600 million Indians would be living in cities! Infrastructure in those cities should be carefully planned with an eye towards maximizing the benefits of technology. Search ‘high speed rail’ on Wikipedia to see what China is doing. By 2020, they will have a high speed railway from Beijing to London. It is high-time Indians wake up and ask leaders to show some common sense.

I agree … Blameless BJP, which can do no wrong! Every liberal, Marxist, progressive, Westernized, poor, rich, Indian … is after the BJP! Poor BJP!

What surprises me is when dyed-in-the wool BJP supporters insult the BJP by comparing BJP with Sanjay Gandhi! BJP deserves to be looked at with more respect – and without blinkers.

    PS –

Galeo – It is is a little sad that you cant seem to know when not to plug for the BJP! This post is about India – and not BJP! You are putting the horse’s tail, before the horse, before the cart!

Give the BJP a break. They probably need some tough love.

i expected you to come up with this view point.
are you the only one with this view point in this insane world.
last month or the month before that. i spent a huge amount of time on learning about the british atrocities in india. and this common wealth games it disgusted me that we are tyring to be part of this.
i was studying to see why we became subordinate to britain
after my partial study i was coming to a similar opinion as yours. then before i could solve the whole puzzle. i came across your blog. it confirmed with a lot of what i had studied.

i want to share a piece of news with you .
in a telugu news channel (StudioN news channel owned indirectly by Former Chief Minister of Andhra pradesh Chandra Babu Naidu )they showed a report on common wealth games. in that report girls were being arranged for sexual services to the guests of the common wealth games .
it was disgusting. i will see if i can find the video for you. it was a bus full of girls all set for entertaining foreigners. what
are they doing to our country.

    >>This post is about India – not BJP

Actually the issue is indeed about India – you made it about the BJP… it is the media’s obsession to bring parity between BJP and the Congress – which you seem to constantly echo.

Forcing this parity exposes your biases – which you do not admit to.

With all the faults of the BJP, they are the only party that has tried to create some awareness about the pseudo-secularism of the Congress party. If we decide to discard off the BJP, we have not a single political party that cares for the history of India. We have already seen where the allegiance of the socialists and communists lies. For this reason alone, TINA. 🙂 Unfortunately, that message did not resonate with the masses. That has to do with basic education today, which still teaches us about the aryan invasion theory and makes us feel ashamed to be Indians.

Assuming that what you say is true: –

    1. Does it mean that all BJP’s wrong doings are swept under the carpet!
    2. That BJP is infallible, correct all the time. They make no mistakes and they cannot be faulted!

    Do you disagree with: –

    a. The very decision of bidding for the CWG is a terrible idea.
    b. Spending thousands of crores to promote Western sports with tax-payers money is a bad idea.
    c. To hanker for prestige and respect without performance is real corruption. India’s new-found respect in the world has come from the performance of software sector and the Y2k execution – and its other entrepreneurs.
    d. Pocketing some money comes way down of what is corruption.

    >> If we decide to discard off the BJP, we have not a single political party that cares for the history of India

i wonder if they really care about bharateey history.
the bjp encourages only that history which is against congress. it limits itself strictly to that. it doesnt care about india anymore than congress.

history of bharat. doesnt seem many people care about it.

    one eg.
we have seen so many movies of bhagat singh. no movies on baaga jatin, aurobindo, virendranath chattopadhyay, lala hardayal, ras behari bose, madanlal dhingra, amarendra chatterjee, surya sen, champakaraman pillai, am nair, shyamji krishna verman, raja mahendra pratap, sachin kumar sanyal,
barkatullah, tarak nath das, barindra ghosh wonder why.
the real life stories of these people were more interesting than any movie story that bollywood can cook up. yet no one takes up these projects why.

why so much love for bhagat singh. every child in india knows about bhagat singh. but ask them to name a few more and they are dumb. but ask them cricketer’s names. they will tell you the name of even county level players of other countries.

i guess this is because bhagat singh is necessary for gandhi bashing, congress bashing, khalistan. even pakistan is taking up the task of telling the story of bhagat singh. i think those bhagat singh movies were funded by bjp(but i am not sure 100%.)

my point is that all these political parties are limiting themselves to history that serves their political interests. they dont go any further because they dont care about bharateey history.

You raise a very important point.

For 1 year, I have trying to put a post together … on these people you have named above. The dates are unclear .. facts are rare … adjectives are too many … the issues are undefined …

It has taken me 1 year to reach what I think is possibly 30%-40% of the post … So much work to be done .. it has remained as unfinished draft for 1 year now!
    😦

that gandhi picture. instead of drawing a man with resolve . the artist drew the picture of a blindman groping. it was the angle of the stick that did it.

on the whole. it was a good advertisement for the sex industry. there was a time when the prostitutes of india refused service to europeans considering them untouchable.
