Urdu is a ‘Muslim’ Language

On 6th November 2010, early in the morning, the day after Diwali, I was at Hyderabad Railway Station to receive a friend. Since, I was early, I decided to buy a newspaper. Since, it was the day after Diwali, there was no issue of any newspaper in English, Hindi, Telugu.

But Urdu newspapers were available.

Except Urdu

Understandably – as most Urdu readers were Muslims – who don’t celebrate the ‘Hindu’ festival of Diwali.

Since Urdu was so specifically a Muslim language, it has stagnated and is at death’s door. Unlike Telugu, which survived 400 years of hostility and active neglect by the Nizam’s government – and the benign neglect by the Indian State.
